Topic: LCA of Passive Smart Windows

Description:
Passive Smart Windows are facade technologies that aim to reduce the buildings' environmental impact by reducing their energy consumption; they integrate an Auto-Responsive material which autonomously modifies its optical properties, controlling the solar gains depending on the weather conditions. However, the embodied impact of AR materials has rarely been addressed, raising doubts about the sustainability of PSW technologies.
My thesis project aimed to define a framework for the evaluation of the overall environmental impact of PSW through the LCA approach that included both operational and embodied impact, providing insights into what aspects of the life cycle should be considered and what factors have the highest influence on the results.
